This supportive and engaging class helps vocalists refine their performance skills while preparing for a final concert at the end of the term. Students work on songs of their choice, building stage confidence, learning how to count off tunes, and exploring a range of jazz styles and rhythmic feels, including swing, Latin, waltz, and ballad.
The course also incorporates storytelling and scatting, encouraging deeper expression and improvisation. Returning students and new participants are welcome in this encouraging, performance-focused environment.

Some previous vocal jazz experience.

About Azure McCall
Azure McCall, known as Hawaii’s “First Lady of Jazz,” is a multi-award-winning vocalist celebrated for her deep connection to the vocal traditions of Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Ella Fitzgerald. With warmth and humor, she brings every song to life.
After releasing her first CD, Body and Soul, she was invited by jazz legend Ray Brown to tour as his vocalist, launching an extensive performance career. She later became the first singer to work with Freddie Hubbard’s band and has also performed with Frank Morgan, Tennyson Stephens, Joe Lovano, Geoffrey Keezer, Curtis Lundy, and Dizzy Gillespie.
In 2008, President Barack Obama invited her to perform at his pre-election party. Azure has also been a featured jazz vocalist on Celebrity and Royal Caribbean Cruises, performing in more than 50 countries and sharing her passion for jazz with audiences around the world.
