This class helps vocalists build confidence in live performance with a focus on essential bandstand skills. Students learn how to create clear, readable charts (lead sheets), communicate effectively with instrumentalists, develop simple arrangements, experiment with different styles and rhythmic feels, and explore vocal improvisation.

Participants may bring their own charts—standards or originals—or choose from the instructor’s library of more than 200 professional lead sheets, all transposable to any key. The course begins with professional piano accompaniment and gradually expands to include a full rhythm section, culminating in a live performance with the trio at the end of the quarter.

About Andrea Claburn

Jazz vocalist, composer, arranger, and educator Andrea Claburn is a graduate of the California Jazz Conservatory (B.Mus) and UC Berkeley (B.A. Humanities), and is fully certified in Somatic Voicework™ the LoVetri Method (Vocal Pedagogy) at Baldwin Wallace University.

Andrea teaches vocal technique and function, performance, and improvisation, and performs regularly at prominent venues throughout the Bay Area. Born in Baltimore and raised in Northern California, she grew up studying classical piano and violin in both solo and orchestral settings before turning to jazz.

She brings deep musical understanding to her vocal style, using her voice with an instrumental precision that jazz critic L.R. Bailey called “riveting to hear.” She regularly collaborates with Bay Area musicians including Erik Jekabson, Michael O’Neill, Matt Clark, and Peter Barshay, and has been featured as both an arranger and vocalist with the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra.
