About Ian Carey

Ian Carey is a San Francisco Bay Area–based jazz trumpeter, composer, educator, and writer known for original music that blends sophisticated composition with adventurous improvisation. Praised by Bill Kirchner, editor of The Oxford Companion to Jazz, for asking “deep musical questions” and offering “compelling answers,” Carey leads several ensembles including the Ian Carey Quintet +1, Wood Metal Plastic, Sandbox Quintet, and Duocracy.

A longtime presence in the Bay Area jazz scene, he has performed with numerous regional artists and ensembles as well as visiting musicians including John Daversa, Anton Schwartz, and Satoko Fujii.
