Ian Carey is a San Francisco Bay Area–based jazz trumpeter, composer, educator, and writer known for original music that blends sophisticated composition with adventurous improvisation. Praised by Bill Kirchner (editor, The Oxford Companion to Jazz) for asking “deep musical questions” and offering “compelling answers,” Carey leads several acclaimed ensembles including the Ian Carey Quintet +1, Wood Metal Plastic, Sandbox Quintet, and Duocracy. A longtime presence in the Bay Area jazz scene, he has performed with numerous regional artists and ensembles as well as visiting luminaries such as John Daversa, Anton Schwartz, and Satoko Fujii. As a composer, he has received commissions from Chamber Music America and Intermusic SF and was named one of “12 Bay Area Composers You Should Know” by SFJAZZ. Carey is also an experienced educator who teaches at Sonoma State University and has been a visiting instructor at Stanford University, the California Jazz Conservatory, and Stanford Jazz Workshop
