This vocal ensemble is dedicated to the art of close harmony and group blend. Singers work together to develop precision, balance, and expressive communication within a collaborative setting.
The class explores healthy vocal technique, effective microphone use, stylistic nuance, and how to communicate the meaning of a song.
Repertoire is tailored to the abilities and interests of the group, ranging from classic swing and bebop to contemporary jazz and jazz-influenced pop. Selections may include music associated with The Manhattan Transfer, The Hi-Lo’s, and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, along with arrangements by other renowned vocal jazz arrangers.
Students prepare for a final performance at the end of the quarter. Rehearsal tools, including individual sound files, are provided to support practice outside of class.
This class is open to singers of all ages and voice types. Prior harmony singing experience is required, as most ensemble parts do not carry the melody. Prior jazz experience is welcome but not required.
