Toca y Canta Latin Jazz and Salsa Ensemble
Age Adult
Event Type Class
Department Vocal Performance, Ensembles, Latin
Day Tue
Instructor Edgardo Cambon
Status inperson event

Explore Latin jazz, salsa, and Afro-Cuban music in an ensemble focused on groove, clave, improvisation, and stylistic interpretation. Repertoire includes classic and contemporary material built around traditional song forms and rhythmic practices rooted in Cuban music and the broader Latin American and Caribbean traditions.

Participants will develop greater familiarity with clave-based rhythms, ensemble roles, phrasing, improvisation, and the interaction between vocals, percussion, horns, and rhythm section.

Instrumentation

This ensemble welcomes instrumentalists and vocalists, especially:

  • Percussionists (congas, bongó, timbales, drum set, and small percussion such as güiro, maracas, and claves)

  • Bassists, pianists, and guitarists

  • Horn players

  • Vocalists (Spanish-speaking singers especially encouraged)

Prerequisites

  • Basic technical facility on your instrument and some music-reading ability

  • Prior experience with Latin styles is not required; experience with funk, jazz, or rock can provide a useful foundation

  • Percussionists should already be comfortable playing their instrument, as individual technique instruction is not part of ensemble rehearsal

  • Not intended for absolute beginners

If you are relatively new to your instrument or unsure whether the ensemble is the right level, contact the instructor at ecambon@jazzschool.org. In some cases, a few private lessons before the course may make participation possible.
