What are the other musicians in an ensemble playing, and how do their choices affect what you hear and play in response?
This workshop explores the art of interactive improvisation: listening closely, responding in the moment, and contributing to the direction and feel of the music. Open to musicians of all ages and experience levels, including beginners. The session will include playing in a variety of ensemble configurations.
Through both swing and free improvisation, participants will explore approaches to comping, reacting, creating space, and supporting one another. The workshop will focus on developing the heightened awareness and responsiveness musicians bring to unfamiliar playing situations.
Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a favorite recording. Selected recordings may be played and discussed as part of a group listening session.
