Perform classic and contemporary big band repertoire in a full 19-piece ensemble. This class focuses on section playing, ensemble precision, stylistic interpretation, and the rhythmic and dynamic coordination required in a large jazz ensemble.

Participants will:

  • Refine section blend, phrasing, articulation, and balance

  • Strengthen rhythmic precision and ensemble coordination

  • Perform classic and contemporary big band arrangements

  • Workshop and perform original compositions by ensemble members

Commitment

Full three-quarter participation (fall, winter, and spring) is required.

Prerequisites

  • Strong sight-reading skills

  • Intermediate to advanced instrumental technique

  • Ability to blend and balance within a section

  • Jazz improvisation skills appropriate to big band repertoire

  • All ensembles culminate in a live, free performance.

  • A placement audition is required for new students.

About Jeff Brown

Jeff Brown is a Bay Area native, musician, and educator. He earned a B.M. in Jazz Studies from Cal State Northridge and an M.M. in Saxophone Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno, where he served as a teaching assistant, instructed a jazz combo, and directed the jazz ensemble.

Brown is currently an adjunct professor at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, where he has directed the jazz ensemble and jazz combos and taught saxophone. He also performs regularly throughout the Bay Area in a variety of settings.

A graduate of the Jazzschool’s Young Musicians Program, Brown returns to the Jazzschool as an instructor with a commitment to providing students with the same kind of supportive musical environment that played an important role in his own development.
