Designed for middle and high school musicians, this innovative ensemble explores how electronic instruments and digital technology can expand the sound and creative possibilities of a jazz combo. Students experiment with laptops, synthesizers, effects pedals, MIDI controllers, looping devices, and other tools while applying them to improvisation, ensemble playing, and jazz repertoire.
Topics include live looping, sample triggering, effects processing, integrating electronic textures into ensemble performance, and performing with pre-recorded material. Students also receive an introduction to Ableton Live and use jazz standards as source material for creating original arrangements and collaborative performances.
Participants are encouraged to bring any equipment they would like to incorporate into the ensemble. Core equipment—including a laptop, audio interface, MIDI controllers, effects pedals, and microphones—is provided. The course culminates in a public performance of original works and reimagined jazz repertoire developed by the ensemble.
Admission is by audition.
