This workshop provides an overview of the essential components of live sound systems, giving musicians the knowledge and vocabulary needed to communicate effectively with venues and sound engineers. Topics covered include signal flow, microphone types and selection, signal processing, monitors, soundcheck etiquette, stage plots and input lists, and strategies for clear communication with audio engineers.
Participants will also have the opportunity to practice a basic soundcheck and gain hands-on experience with both analog and digital mixing interfaces.
By the end of the workshop, students will feel more confident navigating performances involving amplified sound systems and working collaboratively with sound engineers.
Zach Gamble (he/him) is a working musician and live sound professional based in the Bay Area. You can find him behind the mixer at several local venues including the Freight, Ivy Room, Brick and Mortar, Black Cat, Elbo Room, and the Jazzschool as well as roaming the halls of SFJAZZ on the production team. Zach wants to share his knowledge and experience as both musician and sound engineer with musicians who have had challenging experiences in venues with sound systems, with grumpy sound guys, and folks who just want to learn more about the trade!
