Develop greater technique, endurance, rhythmic vocabulary, and improvisational skills on the congas. This class is designed for students who already have experience with basic conga sounds and foundational Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Each class begins with technique exercises and warm-ups, followed by the study of new rhythms and applications. Depending on the overall level of the group, repertoire may include Pilón, Songo, Rumba Columbia, Ñañigo, and other Afro-Cuban rhythmic styles.

Students will explore:

  • Further development of conga technique, including double strokes
  • Exercises for increasing speed, control, and endurance
  • New Afro-Cuban rhythms and multi-drum patterns
  • Introduction to soloing and improvisation
  • A deeper understanding of clave and its relationship to different rhythms
  • Approaches to using congas in funk, rock, pop, and other contemporary styles
  • Ensemble playing through guided jams and pre-recorded accompaniment tracks

As an accomplished vocalist as well as a percussionist, Edgardo may also introduce opportunities for students to sing while playing.

Prerequisites

  • Knowledge of basic conga sounds and techniques
  • Familiarity with the tumbao or marcha for Cuban son
  • Familiarity with basic Rumba Guaguancó parts on one and two congas
  • Students should have access to two congas for home practice

Congas are available at the school. Depending on enrollment, students may occasionally need to bring one conga so that everyone has access to two drums during class.
