Explore conducted improvisation, a collaborative approach in which an ensemble creates music in real time in response to a conductor’s visual cues. The class introduces a vocabulary of gestures based in part on Butch Morris’ influential “Conduction” method for shaping free improvisation, with cues governing elements such as rhythm, dynamics, texture, repetition, and ensemble interaction.
Open to improvisers on all instruments and at all levels, the ensemble offers a structured way to develop confidence improvising without charts or predetermined tunes while strengthening listening, responsiveness, and awareness of the group. More experienced improvisers can use the format to expand their vocabulary and explore new approaches to spontaneous composition.
Participants will also have opportunities to lead the ensemble and create their own conducted improvisations.
