The Advanced High School Jazz Workshop is a multiple DownBeat Award-winning ensemble for advanced high school musicians with a strong foundation in the bebop tradition. The group explores the harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, and formal innovations of post-bop through the music of artists such as John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, and others.
Students refine their improvisational vocabulary, deepen their rhythmic and harmonic understanding, and develop the skills needed to perform challenging modern jazz repertoire with confidence, creativity, and strong ensemble communication. The ensemble records annually and regularly participates in jazz festivals and competitions.
Admission is by audition. Auditions are held annually prior to the start of the school year.
