Develop your artistic voice by working directly with a professional jazz trio and exploring the essentials of jazz singing in one of the music’s most classic settings. Led by Amanda Addleman and her trio, this workshop offers personalized instruction in bandleading, interpretation of jazz standards, count-offs and endings, spontaneous arranging, improvisation, stage presence, and communication with the band.

Each participant will prepare a jazz standard to perform with the trio and will receive individualized feedback from Amanda and the accompanying musicians on musical interpretation, ensemble interaction, and performance approach. Participants should bring three copies of a lead sheet in their key and have a general tempo in mind. All levels are welcome — this workshop is designed as a supportive and engaging environment for exploring the tradition of jazz singing.

About Amanda Addleman

Amanda Addleman is a New York City-based, San Francisco-raised vocalist, pianist, composer, arranger, and educator. Deeply rooted in the jazz tradition while drawing influence from contemporary folk, rock, and pop, her music balances reverence for classic jazz language with a modern, genre-fluid sensibility.

Addleman recently completed her M.M. at the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Theo Bleckmann, Jeremy Manasia, Phil Markowitz, Jamie Baum, and Ingrid Jensen. She previously earned her B.M. from Berklee College of Music and has also studied with acclaimed jazz vocalist and educator Tierney Sutton and Bay Area somatic voice instructor Loryn Barbeau.

As an educator, Addleman maintains a private teaching studio in voice, piano, music theory, jazz improvisation, and composition. She has worked extensively in Bay Area schools as a music director and clinician since 2009 and has also taught college-age and adult students at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley.

Her release Into the Light (2020) explores themes of contrast, transformation, and personal growth, and has received praise from critics and fellow musicians alike.
