The Jazzschool Young Musicians Program’s award-winning Studio Band (2nd place finalists, 2014 Next Generation Jazz Festival) shares the bill with the acclaimed Jazz Garden Big Band, both under the direction of leading Bay Area educator Dave Eshelman. This exciting and rare pairing of two generations of world-class big bands is not to be missed!
The Jazzschool Studio Band
This award-winning ensemble trains advanced high school musicians from throughout the Bay Area. Students develop technique, knowledge of jazz style and an ability to improvise through standard and contemporary big band repertoire. This ensemble performs frequently and participates in competitions throughout the U.S. Jazzschool Studio Bands have played at Yoshi’s and Savanna Jazz, as well as jazz festivals in California, New York, Seattle, Idaho, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France and the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland.
The Jazz Garden Big Band
The Jazz Garden Big Band has recorded four critically acclaimed albums and features some of the most active freelance musicians in the bay area. Many have performed with the band for decades, including saxophonist Mary Fettig and trumpeter Steve Campos, both alumni of the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Others are trumpeter Louis Fasman, former member of the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra; saxophonist and wood flute virtuoso Dann Zinn, a favorite of bay area musicians such as Taylor Eigsti; guitarist Randy Vincent and bassist John Shifflett, also local favorites with impressive credentials; jazz teachers Rory Snyder, Bob Farrington and Dr. Mitch Butler, new Director of Jazz Studies at CSU East Bay, Dave Martell, and Erik Jekabson, Jazzschool Young Musicians Program Director; former students from Dave Eshelman’s jazz programs are: saxophonist Bob Kenmotsu, drummer Alan Hall, trombonist Jeanne Geiger, bass trombonist Rich Lee, trumpeter Mike Olmos, and Colin Hogan, piano and accordion. jazzgarden.com
Trombonist/arranger Dave Eshelman has been leading the Jazz Garden Big Band in the Bay Area since 1978. The band has served as a vehicle for his big band compositions that have also been performed by the Joe Henderson Big Band, Bill Watrous’ Refuge West and the All Star Tribute to West Coast Jazz. The band has recorded four critically acclaimed cds and appeared at a multitude of bay area venues.
