Women’s Jazz & Blues Camp

Second Annual
JAZZSCHOOL WOMEN’S JAZZ & BLUES CAMP
March 25-29, 9:30am-3pm    Concert Friday March 29, 6pm

OUR MISSION

Produced by Jazzschool faculty members Jean Fineberg and Ellen Seeling (Asst. Dir. and Dir. of the Montclair Women’s Big Band,) our mission is to provide women musicians with a supportive and musically rigorous week of playing, fun and networking with others who share their passion for music.

OUR FACULTY

The Camp employs an all-women faculty from the Montclair Women’s Big Band, the Jazzschool and the Bay Area’s most respected performers and educators.

INSTRUMENTAL and VOCAL

We welcome all vocalists and players of traditional and non-traditional instruments. The only prerequisite is some facility and ownership of an instrument (we do have some loaners and some storage for large instruments.)

Camp provides drums, percussion, amps, pianos/keyboards, vibes, microphones and music stands. Scheduling permitting, we make our best effort to accommodate those who wish to play more than one instrument.

ENSEMBLES & ELECTIVES

After the morning Master Class/Warmup, there are four open periods during the day. Campers indicate their preferences among the following:

Performing electives

Jazz Combo

Latin Ensemble

Blues & Soul Band

Roots Music Choir

Non-performing electives

Theory/Improvisation at 3 levels (hands-on)

Percussion Workshop

Jazz History & Analysis.

PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS AND DAILY OPEN JAM

The lunchtime break features a daily faculty-facilitated open jam session. In addition each camper receives one private consultation during the week on the instrument of her choice.

Women can bring lunch, purchase it at the onsite Jazzcaffe, or walk to one of the many inexpensive eateries within a couple of blocks of the Jazzschool.

HOUSING, TRANSPORTATION

Women come from all over the San Francisco Bay Area and out of town. We have local campers willing to host an out-of-town musician for the week, so if you’re interested in housing, please ask. We assist in forming carpools by sharing willing participants’ location information.
